More than a year after it was officially launched for commercial use, 5G is gradually turning people’s imagination of future information life into reality. What does it mean for consumers? What are the development trends of 5G consumption?
Recently, Fang Aiqing, deputy director of the Committee of Economy of the CPPCC National Committee, former member of the Party Leading Group of the Ministry of Commerce and vice Minister of The Ministry of Commerce, received an exclusive interview from Science and Technology Daily and had an in-depth discussion on these topics.
Advance moderately and lay out 5G network infrastructure
“Over the past year, China’s 5G industry has been developing steadily and rapidly, creating a series of world-leading innovations.” Talking about the current development trend of 5G, Fang aiqing said.
This year, for example, China built and opened the world’s highest 5G base station, bringing 5G signals to Mount Everest. Moreover, the 5G network in the underground coal mine, which is more than 500 meters underground, has been opened, setting a record for the deepest underground 5G network.
Currently, China has the world’s largest 5G network with the widest coverage, with 700,000 5G base stations, accounting for nearly 70 percent of the global total, and more than 180 million terminals connected, Fang said.
“Based on the huge network, China vigorously promotes the application of 5G in the industrial field, truly making the development of 5G promote the development of industrial Internet and accelerate the process of new industrialization.” Fang also observed that 5G technology has begun to enter the service sector, increasingly affecting our daily life.
“Of course, it is a common consensus in the industry that the actual application scenarios of 5G technology on the whole still lag behind technology development and infrastructure construction. It is also an indisputable fact that the lack of core applications leads to high operating costs and difficult cost recovery.” Fang Aiqing pointed out.
However, he believes that on the basis of continuous technological development, it is of more strategic value to moderately advance the construction of 5G network infrastructure, promote the steady development of business forms, and drive application development with network construction.
In the consumer space, 5G will be within reach
As for the commercial trend of 5G, Fang Aiqing believes that in general, the commercial development of 5G is fast in industries with high technology content, high labor cost, high operational risk and high cross-border integration.
For example, Fang aiqing pointed out that the distribution industry once relied heavily on human management for warehousing, sorting and delivery. Entering the 5G era, a large number of smart warehousing, unmanned distribution sites and even intelligent logistics bases have been born. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, new applications such as “5G+ unmanned vehicle” have emerged.
“For ordinary consumers, 5G will be within reach.” Data showed that the number of 5G users in China had exceeded 110 million by the end of August, Fang said. From January to July this year, a total of 77.508 million 5G mobile phones were shipped nationwide, accounting for 44.2 percent of the total mobile phone shipments in the same period. 5G terminal is full of beautiful things, product gradient gradually complete, price also will continue to drop.
Based on this, Fang aiqing believes 5G technology will change consumers’ lives in two ways: on the one hand, there is no delay in connection, and consumers can choose their consumption scenes freely; On the other hand, machines will replace human beings and intelligent services will become the norm.
“With the maturity and implementation of 5G technology, there will be rich life service products behind terms such as smart family, smart endowment, smart baby care, smart transportation and smart logistics,” he said. Smart services will become the new normal in the field of daily life, Said Fang.
5G consumption will present several major trends
What development trend will 5G consumption show in the future? Fang Aiqing outlined several major directions.
“After the advent of THE 5G era, the extensive application of virtual reality and augmented reality technologies will bring consumers the opportunity to experience product effects in advance. As technology evolves, the range of products that can be experienced online will continue to grow and expand.” In Fang’s view, the new technology complements the traditional enjoyment of “shopping” and will enable an overall upgrade of the consumption experience.
In addition, Fang Aiqing analyzed that the support of 5G technology has broken many restrictions on online purchase of goods, and the categories of products and services that can be consumed through the Internet will be very rich. In the 5G era, the products that people can consume are experiencing a full round of explosion.
From the perspective of consumption facilitation, With 5G data technology and network transmission beginning to be popularized, VR (virtual reality) house viewing can effectively guarantee “true” and “fast” housing, Said Fang. He believes that similar examples or newer forms will become more popular and abundant in all walks of life, and 5G technology will bring more convenience to our life.
Personalized consumption will benefit more from 5G technology. “With the data guarantee provided by 5G networks, consumers can bypass the currently common cumbersome procedures and order products through corresponding web portals, and generate orders and product demands simultaneously in the marketing and production systems.” Based on 5G technology, it will be possible for consumers to directly connect to the industrial Internet and factory production links through merchants’ platforms, Fang said.
