You may not need to buy Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip to get Samsung’s foldable display. According to Korean media, Samsung is preparing to provide its folding screen technology to companies other than the company’s own mobile phone department.
According to reports, Samsung will provide 1 million foldable displays, including horizontal folding (Galaxy Z Flip) and vertical folding (Z Fold) screens. Some mobile phone brands currently sell tens of millions of mobile phones every quarter, so 1 million foldable displays may not sound like much, but for a very young foldable display market, this may represent significant growth .
According to industry sources, “multiple” Chinese mobile phone companies have been cooperating with Samsung Display to develop foldable hardware. These third-party mobile phones will all be shipped in the second half of 2021.
Although Samsung tends to retain display technology (including foldable displays) for its products first, its long-term success depends on selling components to third parties. For example, in 2017, Samsung’s profit from iPhone X display and chip manufacturing was greater than the profit from Galaxy S8. The main challenge Samsung faces now is how to cultivate the market for foldable phones.
