At the CES2021 exhibition in January this year, LG announced a particularly cool smartphone product, which is shaped like a reel, which can be expanded freely without any folding structure to expand the screen area. This scrolling screen phone called “LG Rollable” has received a lot of attention from digital enthusiasts since its announcement. LG officials have previously stated that it will release this product later this year. However, according to the latest news, LG Electronics will stop developing smartphones with scrolling screens.
According to Korean media Chosun Biz citing sources familiar with the matter, LG Electronics will stop the development of scroll-screen smartphones and has notified its partner BOE to stop development.
According to the previous official introduction, LG Rollable uses what LG calls a “unique resizable screen”. By sliding in and out to change the surface area, the screen can be transformed from the size of a mobile phone to the size of a small tablet. The size can be expanded from 6.8 inches to 7.4 inches.
In addition, LG Rollable has more unique advantages compared to other folding flexible screen phones. For example, in the unfolded state, the scroll screen is smaller, more convenient to carry, and does not produce creases. Moreover, there is no exposed hinge structure for the scroll screen. Therefore, whether it is from an aesthetic point of view or a practical point of view, the scroll screen is better. If LG really stopped developing scroll screen phones, it would be really a pity.
Why did LG stop developing scroll screen phones? Earlier news said that LG will sell its mobile business that has been losing money for years. The suspension of development of scroll-screen phones may be related to this matter. Public information shows that LG’s mobile business has suffered losses for 23 consecutive quarters since the second quarter of 2015. As of the fourth quarter of last year, the department’s accumulated losses reached 5 trillion won (approximately 29.3 billion yuan).
Although LG has stopped the development of scroll-screen mobile phones, the editor believes that as a more reasonable flexible screen application, scroll-screen smartphones have a bright future and will definitely not stop the pace of innovation. OPPO, Samsung, and TCL also all Demonstrated related concept models. With the development of flexible screen technology, cheap and practical scroll screen mobile phones will certainly enter the homes of ordinary people.
