According to experts’ prediction, the total scale of 5g base stations in China may exceed 600000 in 2020, which will cover prefecture level cities in China. At the same time, 5g terminals are developing very fast. 5g mobile phones with less than 2000 yuan have appeared in the market, laying the foundation for the popularization of 5g mobile phones. According to the data recently released by the China Institute of information and communications, a total of 81 5g mobile phones were launched in China in the first five months of 2020. In May, the domestic sales of 5g mobile phones accounted for 46.3% of the total mobile phone shipment in the same period. It is estimated that the total 5g mobile phones will be more than 200 million in 2020.
Looking at the existing 5g mobile phones in the market, it is standard to support 5g NSA / SA mode, and the support for multi band is more and more comprehensive. However, in the dual card and dual standby function that people are used to, most of them only support “4G + 5g”, which is a bit conservative. In fact, in the white paper of China Mobile 5g mobile phone products released on November 20 this year, although China Mobile mentioned the “4G + 5g” and “5g + 5g” dual card mode, it clearly indicated that it would recommend “5g + 5g” dual card products. Obviously, “4G + 5g” will only be a temporary transition strategy. The general trend of 5g mobile phones is “5g + 5g” dual card and dual standby.
The indispensable double card and double stay
Dual sim card and dual standby means that a mobile phone can insert two SIM cards and use two numbers at the same time. This technology first appeared in China in 2006. At that time, China Unicom held two mobile communication networks, GSM and CDMA. In order to attract users to choose CDMA services, China Unicom and some mobile phone manufacturers jointly launched the so-called “dual mode dual standby” mobile phone, which can insert both GSM and CDMA cards at the same time.
Later, people found that this technology is very practical. First, a mobile phone can use two numbers, which saves the cost and trouble of bringing two mobile phones; second, the two numbers can have their own use occasions, which is completely different; third, the new package is preferential, and the old number is not willing to be discarded. A mobile phone with two cards and two waiting is undoubtedly the best solution.
Therefore, the dual card dual standby function has become the standard configuration of mobile phones in the domestic market. Of course, dual card and dual standby is no longer the exclusive feature of the Chinese market, and mobile phones sold abroad basically have the function of dual card and dual standby.
At present, the dual card dual standby function needs chip support, so what kind of dual card dual standby function the mobile phone has in the market is actually decided by the mobile phone chip manufacturer. At present, most of the 5g SOC chips launched by mainstream chip manufacturers support “4G + 5g” dual card and dual standby, including Qualcomm’s snapdragon 865 and snapdragon 765G, Huawei’s Qilin 9905g, Qilin 985 and Qilin 820. Currently, only Tianji series 5g chips of MediaTek, such as Tianji 1000 +, Tianji 820, Tianji 800u and Tianji 700, support “5g + 5g” dual card and dual standby.
“4G + 5g” dual card and dual standby means that the mobile phone can only access 5g service for one number card, and only 4G service can be used for the other card, while “5g + 5g” can use 5g service for both cards. In the early stage of 5g business development, there were no 5g signals in many places. “4G + 5g” is undoubtedly a very realistic countermeasure, and consumers will not have any worries. However, judging from the state’s support for the “new infrastructure” and the positive actions of operators, the extensive coverage of 5g network is expected to achieve great results this year and next, which means that “4G + 5g” will be eliminated soon, and “5g + 5g” is the general trend.
Gradual development has become a rule
In the history of mobile phone development, “4G + 5g” such transitional dual card dual standby is not an isolated case. In fact, every time the mobile communication technology is updated, there will be cross-generation dual card dual standby models. For example, at the beginning of 3G business in China, SIM card and mobile phone must be replaced when switching to 3G package. However, the “2G + 3G” dual card and dual waiting allows many consumers to use both high-quality 3G packages and old 2G cards. In the 4G era, the connotation of dual card and dual standby is more abundant. There are various transition schemes such as “2G + 4G”, “3G + 4G”, and each has its own applicable population. The reason for the transitional dual card and dual standby function is not only due to user demand, but also to technical and cost reasons.
In terms of technology, at the beginning of upgrading from 2G to 3G and 3G to 4G, the overall technical performance of the mobile phone chipset couldn’t keep up with each card slot and could not be compatible with two code cards. It could only be a combination of “2G + 3G” and “3G + 4G”. Later, with the continuous improvement of mobile phone chipset technology, dual card dual standby Netcom has become the mainstream of the market. From the cost point of view, the transitional dual card dual standby chip appeared earlier and the cost is lower, so mobile phone manufacturers are willing to use it to design a new generation of models to seize the market. “4G + 5g” mobile phones are popular for the same reason.
However, the transitional plan can not last long after all, and the “5g + 5g” that can bring consumers more freedom is the general trend. In fact, chips and mobile phones that support dual 5g standby are already on sale. The existing 5g mobile phones in the market mostly use 5g SOC chips from Qualcomm and Huawei, so they only support “4G + 5g”. However, most of Tianji 5g chips launched by MediaTek from last year to this year support “5g + 5g” dual card and dual standby. It can be predicted that with the mass production of terminals equipped with MediaTek Tianji chip, more and more 5g mobile phones will appear after the second half of 2020
